My first epiphany with birds was in Australia in 1998, when I came across the multitudes of Rainbow Parakeets that throng the parks of Sydney and the East Coast. I was suddenly struck by the striking colours and patterns that birds possess and started to notice them more and more. Though in no way becoming a dyed-in-the-wool twitcher, the years have seen my interest constantly increase, and I am always on the look out for photographic opportunities, whether it be a new species, different behaviour or a special interplay of light and bird.

This gallery is primarily focussed on the birds of the world - the various Penguins of Antarctica and the sub-Antarcitc islands (The Emperor, King, Adelie, Macaroni and Gentoo are all represented here); the amazing variety of Raptors and Owls throughout the continents, such as the White-tailed Sea Eagles in Norway and Japan, the Red Kite in Wales, or Burrowing Owls in Florida; the splendour of Kingfishers (my favourites being the Malachite Kingfisher of southern Africa and the Amazon Kingfisher of Brazil); the spectacular colours of the Hyacinth Macaw, Carmine Bee-eater, Lilac-breasted Roller, Toco Toucan, and Mandarin Duck, or the more homely charms of the European Robin.

Additionally, this gallery includes a number of images of reptiles and their cousins, such as the Yellow Anaconda we followed through the swamps of the Pantanal in Brazil, the queer charm of a Parsons Chameleon in the forest of Madagascar, or mating Tenebrionid Beetles in the dunes of Namibia.

Note that all the images in this gallery are of wild animals in their natural environment. And as with all the main galleries, I have chosen to show them in random order rather than thematically or chronologically.
