After the clean air and water of the Paraguay River, the next stage of the journey was on to the extreme dust of the Transpantaneira Highway that part- bisects the Pantanal. Despite the heavy dust, our excellent guide Douglas Trent of Focus Tours showed us the wonders of a different side of the Pantanal.
The bird life was even more impressive, especially the Hyacinth Macaws that roosted in the tree above one of our lodges. Other highlights included - two spectacular encounters with a raft of Giant River Otters, including three inquisitive babies; the nonchalant Toco Toucan that was more interested in the papaya another bird had opened than us; and the Yellow Anaconda that I was able to follow on foot deep into the swamp.
