Sossusvlei and Namib-Naukluft National Park

April 2007

Back to main Namibia gallery

The red dunes of Sossusvlei are amongst the most recognized symbols of Namibia and a major tourist magnet. And justifiably so. Despite a camera malfunction that cost me a morning of shooting (I rather stupidly left my spare body in the lodge) and the constant pangs of loss I felt, walking the dunes was a great experience.

Photographically the highlight was the balloon ride I took on the second morning. Having been on a balloon in the Masai Mara and the Serengeti I had an idea of what I would experience, but the stunning scenery made it simply the best such ride I have ever had. The dawn light and the sight of the other ballons over the dunes, followed by a champagne breakfast was as good as it gets.

Given the dearth of water, wildlife is not a major draw for the area but I was lucky enough to see Bat-eared foxes and got probably my best shot of an Oryx of the whole trip.
